Christmas Joy.

Christmas is such a special time of year. I love the lights. There is something magical about the lights. They shine so brightly. I love to sit in the dark, with only the Christmas tree lights illuminated, and contemplate. I find that when I focus on the light and ponder issues that normally create within me conflict or unrest I am filled with peace. I can sort through my thoughts without the disruptive feelings of frustration or confusion. The light calms me. With it I feel warm and secure. I think that is why the Savior is compared to light... the Light of the world. Light always chases away the dark. Always.

This Christmas I have found myself contemplating many things... doubts, worries, my future... aaagh... what to do with my future?! I realized that I needed to do something each day to have the Spirit of Christ with me. This will illuminate my course. I had the opportunity to hear the testimonies of my parents and my grandfather. Hearing their testimonies helped me to recognize how the actively seeking the presence of the Lord's light in their lives has helped to change them, to better them, to solidify for each of them the peaceful reassurances that only a knowledge of the gospel can bring. I can't wait until Christmas to focus on the light. It is something I must actively pursue each day. Sheri Dew said, "We are the followers of Jesus Christ. And we have been His followers and have loved Him for a long, long time. Nothing is more important than working and sacrificing and enduring for Him."

This Christmas I am recommitted to a more active pursual of Christ's light in my life. That is my wish for you... my dear family and friends. It is the only way to have certain peace and understanding in this life regardless of the trials or tribulations we experience. I want that comfort for you and me.

I hope you have a very Merry Christmas. I love you.

the blame game.

Since the beginning of mankind... the Fall of Adam and Eve actually (for my non Mormon peeps... the Fall is when Adam and Eve ate the fruit in the garden of Eden)... man has placed responsibility, for consequences of choices made, on others. Enough already! We all have done it and still do it. Why??? What is so hard about accepting responsibility for feelings we have and choices we make? We even blame "human nature" for the reason we blame. I've thought about this off and on for the past few years but the other night I couldn't fall asleep for thinking about this very topic.

When I was a pre-teen I invited a friend over to stay the night. We painted nails in my room. It was against house rules but I didn't tell her that. After my friend left the next day I was cleaning up the evidence when I reached for the last item, a small full bottle of some brightly colored pink/red nail polish perched high on a dresser. Little did I know, but the top was not screwed all the way on. Just barely actually. Yeah, so not being that tall I had to reach above my head to get the bottle. I picked up the bottle by the brush end and well, it was a hot mess. The bottle dropped to the floor, despite my pleas that it defy gravity, and spilled it's contents all over the light mauve carpet in my room. I tried in vain to clean it up only realizing I was making it worse. So, I quickly devised a plan. I went downstairs and tearfully told my mother what my friend had done, even after I told her that painting nails in the bedroom was against the rules (because it might spill, duh). My mother patiently listened to me and then pointed out that I was lying as the evidence of the spilled nail polish was all down the front of my shirt. A detail I had neglected to notice. I felt like a jerk after that and I got into a lot of trouble. So, why couldn't I just be honest from the beginning? Because I was afraid of getting in trouble. But I made a decision. I broke the rules. With that come consequences. I still got in trouble.

In everything we do our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors are involved. I like to explain those three things like they are a family, each with a different role but dependent on one another. In the above incident my feelings were fear and regret. My thoughts were about future punishment and my mother's disappointment. My actions were to lie and to blame. The choice to blame was not my only option. I am not a puppet. No one forced me to take that course of action, to make those words come out of my mouth. I had the option to tell the truth. But I didn't. I think deep down I also felt hopeful because I thought my mom wouldn't find out it was me and I could go on being happy and without punishment. There are always consequences for our decisions. Consequences are unavoidable.

Some of you might look at people like Hitler, who spend a lifetime doing really bad things without apparent consequences. That is just not true. You can run and you can hide... but, you can't hide forever. It is truth. Decisions create consequences. Always. And those consequences will be a direct reflection of the decisions we make. Now, had I decided in that moment to stand up and say to my mom exactly what happened then I still would have gotten in trouble, but there wouldn't be an additional consequence caused by my attempts to lie (e.g. my guilt for disobeying and lying, my mother's hurt, lost trust, etc.) Had the evidence not been so clear and had I effectively deceived my mother I still would have the consequences of a guilty conscience and a dishonest heart. I couldn't have lived peacefully with either of those weighing on my heart and mind.

Recently events at work have only made me more acutely aware of the effect that blaming others for our poor choices can have on an individual, on a spousal relationship, and on a family. Here are some things I've heard recently:

**He/she drives me crazy/makes me so mad.
**I can't because...
**If he/she hadn't... then I wouldn't...
**I only did it/said it because he/she did/said...
**It's not my fault...

Proper ownership would sound more like this:

**I feel ... when this event happens... because I think...
**I don't want to...
**I did this because I chose to get upset/frustrated about...
**I chose to act this way because I didn't like what he/she did/said
**My responsibility in this is...

I think the world would largely be a different place if we would assume responsibility for our thoughts, feelings, and actions. I feel like we would have more sympathy and forgiveness for others. There would be an increase in trust and a decrease in interpersonal conflict. Healthy communication would abound. Marriage relationships would be strengthened. Parent-child relationships would be more harmonious.

Since this is something we all do... beginning in our very young years... how do we change? Ownership is part of repentance. So maybe the solution lies in utilizing the Atonement in our everyday lives. Christ is the author of our salvation. It is through Him that we can change. Maybe by assuming responsibility with Him first we can have the strength and courage to do that with ourselves and with those in our association. I don't care how old you are or how dismal things may seem, it's not too late to start. It's our choice to make. The blame game ends here.

Now, can someone help me off my soapbox? This one is kinda high.

blech.

***WARNING: This post is going to be one big whine fest. If you're not into whine, you might want to skip this.***

I hate being sick. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Did I mention that I hate being sick? Because I do. I hate it. Over Thanksgiving... which was really awesome by the way... I managed to pick up the funk. My little niece and nephew were sick but I couldn't resist cuddling up to them and loving on them. Unfortunately they were sick. However, I could have gotten the funk from anyone... people at work, people on the plane, people who don't wash their hands, people who don't cover their mouths to sneeze or cough, people... So, I can't blame my little beauties.

Being sick one day is one too long. Being sick for six days is absurd. Thankfully I don't have a life threatening illness or anything but it sure feels like it sometimes. Every time I think I'm on the mend it goes back down hill. I've been out of work for three days due to illness. The doctor told me that as long as I have fever and mucus (in my quantity) I shouldn't be anywhere near people, especially kids. Since that is my day job I've been confined to the house. I'm getting cabin fever. Nights are the worst. That's when the cough is the most severe. Each time I lay down it's like the mucus party begins. You've seen those commercials. When they say "we could be here aaaallll night" they ain't lying.

Oh oh, and the medicine, the medicine is horrible. It makes my stomach feel like a war is going on. They told me to take food with it because it will be hard on the stomach. And it is. I can't imagine taking it without food... even though the box says you can take it either way. A few more days of the medicine. I can do this right? Hopefully the symptoms will go away. Hopefully. I got a blessing before I came home. Every time it gets really bad I just think about that. It's going to be okay. I know it. But for the moment WAAAAA WAAAA WAAAAA.

So, anybody got some cheese?

warp speed.

So, somehow I thought that once October was over things would settle down and I would have time... and lots of it. Apparently I was mistaken. I mean, yesterday it was November 1st and today it is the 21st. I'm missing the last 21-ish days. Not really sure where they went. And it just dawned on me that Thanksgiving is this coming week?! How is that when you get older time flies by so quickly? When I was a child a month felt like forever. Yeah, so I'm a little ashamed that I somehow missed the passage of almost an entire month but also kinda not so secretly glad 2009 is almost over. I think I'm ready for a new beginning... a fresh start.

hello November!

Can I tell you how glad I am that it is November?! October was such a tough month between work responsibilities, church responsibilities, random stressors, and an unexpected move. I haven't been that tired in a while. I felt like there was so much to do and not enough time. Then in the height of being totally overwhelmed I started thinking about all my married friends who manage to move while taking care of themselves and their families. I don't know how they manage. At any rate, I don't think I've ever been so happy to start November.

Polly Pocket sized friends.

I have really great friends. They are supportive and kind. They make me laugh. They encourage me to be better. They cheer me up and give great hugs. They say the nicest things and always make me feel so good. I wish that I could carry around Polly Pocket sized versions of my friends. That way when I have a bad day or feel a little down I could just pull one out of my pocket for a little pick me up. My dear friends... I you!

on the road.

So, I had this discussion tonight about how I take pictures (and occasionally a video or two) while I drive. Kids, don't try this at home. I can't help it. I think the world is so beautiful and I love to record the things I see. Plus, it helps me to stay awake and keeps me entertained when I'm all by my lonesome. There are so many fun sights, cool structures, and stunning nature scenes that I wish I could capture them all... as they are with the naked eye. Since I can't I just settle for second best ... a drive by snap shot. So I decided to share a few. Jean Marie... the wisteria colored tree shots and monster mouth truck pic are for you. :)

Shots taken during various trips from SC to VA and back. Most highway shots are from either I-77 or I-81.

The Plains! The Plains! VA

Almost home. Notice the stone fences... Civil War era remnants.

Scenes from an alternative route home.

Ahh, Home Sweet Home.

I love watching birds fly. These little teeny birds fly in huge flocks back home. This isn't the best pic. I've seen some pretty big flocks and got so distracted I've actually pulled over.

Trip to UT to see my friends a few years ago. Special place in my heart for this view.

Trip from Montana to Iowa with Mom and the Emdog after Brian and Sheena's wedding.

Road trip to the Y with Emdog. Recognize any of these sights?

The reality is.... I have lots more pics like this. These are just some of my favorites. Hope you enjoyed. Good night and good luck.

claustrophobia and voicemail.

So... this may sound weird but sometimes I feel claustrophobic in my clothes. It's like my clothes are closing in on me. Hah, no pun intended. Seriously though, I put on a what I consider a fairly comfortable outfit and by the end of the day I can't get out of it fast enough. I feel like I can't breathe. Why can't I just wear yoga pants, a t-shirt, and flip flops every day? Then I wouldn't have this whole "clothes closing in" issue.

On an unrelated issue... when I have a really bad day at work - a day that never seems to end (like today) - I need a really good pick-me-up, so I sometimes turn to ... voicemail. That's right, those tender little messages I get from loved ones. I have a habit of saving some of my favorites, ones that remind me I'm loved. I have some from my mom, my sister, my friends, my grandmas... it's great. They make me smile and laugh. Some of the messages are significant songs from the radio, others are little ditties sung by the message givers, and others still are cool moments in time like when my sister called from Israel or when grandma called for my birthday or when my other grandma heard I was sick and wanted to see how I was doing. So, my tender message giving peeps... I salute you. Thank you for thinking of me. I love you!

conference weekend... 3 days away and counting

General Conference is this weekend and I can't hardly wait!!! Two days of blissful learning opportunities. For those of you who may not know what General Conference is .... it is a world wide meeting for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka Mormons; LDS). It happens twice a year over the course of a Saturday and Sunday. Members of the LDS faith around the world come together and are instructed and uplifted by the leaders of the church. Because of the advancements in technology I get to spend the whole weekend viewing the conference in the comfort of my home via satellite. It is a brilliant thing. I love conference and cannot wait for it to begin. Conference is available to anyone interested in participating.... so feel free to tune in or go visit the LDS church closest to your home. You won't regret it!

pics from vacation. as promised.

So, as promised, here are some photos of my fun adventures over my precious two week vacation. These photos are mostly of my time in Orlando.. with some of time visiting my dear siblings and nieces/nephews. So much fun. I'm ready to go back and do it again! I didn't take many of my time in Universal because I was trying to get in as many rides as possible and didn't want to lug the camera around, particularly since a lot of the time I was getting wet. SeaWorld was super cool... and I got lots of animal photos.

Cute little Miles. I want to eat him.

This was taken at a park in Scranton where Cameron and Karen live. We hiked up to the tree house. This is such a classic picture of the kids.

SHAMU! SHAMU! SHAMU!

Some of Shamu's killer whale friends.

Simple little back flip from a ginormous whale. No biggie.

Baby dolphins at Seaworld. There was this little nursing tank for the baby dolphins. So cute.

This is the view of the resort where we stayed. We were across the street at the trolley stop. I loved riding on the trolley. It was so cheap and convenient.

Aren't we precious. It took me like 50 takes to get this pic because Mel kept making funny goofball faces. They were actually pretty funny. It reminded me of the photo shoot I made Emily go through with me a few Christmases ago.

The Hard Rock Cafe is part of City Walk at Universal. We ate there one of the nights we were there. They had this whole room dedicated to Elvis. Nice.

I took this for Ethan. It's a really cool 3D ride at Universal. Spiderman saves you from bad guys by throwing his web. So cool.

Just a little note to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11 and those who have lost their lives since in defending our nations freedoms. God Bless America!!!

I may have lost my voice. I really miss that stadium energy but loved loved loved watching instant replays and getting close ups on all the action.

back to life... back to reality

So, it's been pointed out that I have not blogged in a while. I'm going to blame it on the fact that I have been celebrating BIRTHDAY MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep, I'm determined to party for as long as I can get away with it. As part of the "Happy Birthday to Me" motto that I'm following, I recently vacationed for 16 solid days. Jealous?! It was great. More details are to come but in those 16 days I visited VA, PA, and FL. I got to spend precious time with family and friends. On top of that I: was saved by Spider Man; was sneezed on by Shrek; helped Will Smith kill a load of aliens; made a movie with Christopher Walken; was in a boat attacked by Jaws; almost lost my head to T-Rex; awed by Shamu and pals; rhymed with Dr. Suess; got worked over by Thing 1 and Thing 2; joined the Joe's; and almost got carried away by a Twister... among other things. More details to come I promise.

For those of you that I was unable to see I'm sorry... I wish I could take a year off of work and come spend time with each of you. I miss you!

my life as a musical

It is no secret that I love music. Love it! Unfortunately I am not mega gifted in the music arena. I can usually carry a tune and I know how to sway with the beat. Rumor has it that I taught old MJ a thing or two. But in all seriousness, I do carry a particular gift for hearing a word or phrase in conversation and instantaneously matching it to a song which then plays in my head until something else comes along. This comes in handy when playing games where you have to think of the most songs that contain a particular word. I was not aware of this issue until I went to college. Several of my friends would tease or joke when all of a sudden I was singing out loud in response to some verbal exchange. Since then I have become more aware that I have a tendency to fall into the whole speak and sing routine... but, every once in a while I find myself singing a tune without any idea of how it got started.

Which brings me to my reason for posting... the need to share... to purge the song that has been plaguing my brain for the past 45 minutes. I am about to go into a two hour staff meeting and I need to get this song out of my head so that I am not tortured any longer. It's hard enough to sit still and focus for that long without this particular musical delight. So, thank you to all those who will read this and suffer my fate. I don't know what I would do without your support.

It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small small world.

la cucaracha, la cucaracha, ya no puede caminar...

So, I really hate cockroaches. I have cucaracha PTSD from the mission. Not cool. However, since my trusty friend Melanie has moved away I have become the "Cockroach Killer". I'm a local hero in my house. Nevertheless, cockroaches give me the heebie jeebies. They are vile little buggers that just don't die. In SC we have cockroaches called Palmetto Bugs. They are really ginormous tree roaches just a bit smaller than the puppy sized ones I faced as a missionary in Venezuela. Thank goodness for Raid.

chi town

So my trip to Chicago was a whirlwind one (or if you're Gov. Sanford that would be "world wind"). Trip to Chicago you say? Yes, that's right. A few months ago my old mission comp and dear friend "Griffs" contacted me and begged me to come nanny for what would be by then her 8 month old nursing daughter while she attended a conference for her job as a Pampered Chef director. After she twisted my arm by showing me cute pics of the baby I accepted. Her dear mother provided airline miles for a ticket and Griffs provided the hotel accommodations. Love them! So, here's my itinerary:

1. Sunday night: I flew out, spent a glorious 7.5 hours in a layover in ATL thanks to some spontaneous thunderstorms, and made it to my hotel in the heart of Chicago somewhere around 2am. Nice. Here is a view from the room, 29 floors up:

2. Monday: I woke up to an empty hotel room and sleeping baby. Showered and got ready in time for baby to wake up to a stranger. We hit it off instantly of course... and have been BFFs ever since. We spent most of the day at the conference center so mom could nurse. Early afternoon we headed back and took a long walk around a few of the blocks in front of the hotel. Across the street from our hotel is the NBC studio where Oprah is filmed. I gave her a shout out. Monday night was pizza from Giordano's. Deep dish is tasty!!

3. Tuesday: Pretty much the same as Monday. More Aimee and baby bonding time. So fun. I did manage to squeeze in some solid chat time with my dear Griffs while baby nursed and slept. I even got to sneak into the back of the PC training. The auditorium was packed with a lot of wild women, fog machines, glitter outfits, hand clappers, noise makers, and other unmentionables. What happened there is top secret. If you want to know more you are gonna have to talk to Griffs. Here are some fun pics of me and baby on the bus rides:

Oh, and here is a view of the Chi Town skyline from the bus:

4. Wednesday: A short trip to the conference center for the morning. Griffs and I then took a nice speed walk through downtown Chicago under construction in order to catch a lift to the airport aboard the "El" train. I kept expecting to see the one armed man... or better yet a little Harrison Ford. We made it through security... it only took about a hundred hours.. and then we inhaled our lunch... for Griffs.. that is almost literal. We said our goodbyes and I made it home before midnight. Here is a pic of Griffs and my sweaty self on the train. Please excuse the crazy eyes:

Now it's back to life. Back to reality.
